2017 Beneteau Oceanis 45
*RARE OCCASION* Like new BENETEAU Oceanis 45 – 2017 model. Privately owned and sailed. Very well maintained, NON-SMOKING owners, no pets. Lots of extras. All hardware and gear in pristine condition. Owners have just had it thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and waxed throughout, making it READY FOR IT'S NEW OWNER!
WHY THIS IS THE RIGHT BOAT FOR YOU?
There are many sailboats on the market, some of them being very similar to this one. Not all boats are alike! In a few words, this is what makes this one stand out from the others:
- PRIVATELY OWNED AND SAILED. Many charter companies buy boats and rent them for a few years before selling them. For them to be profitable, they have to be rented to all and anyone, year round, making them age much faster. Boat experts say that chartered sailboats typically age 5 to 10 times quicker than privately owned ones.
- USED ONLY IN LAKE CHAMPLAIN. Most boats today are purchased and sailed in salt waters, making them wear much faster. Catch & Release has only been sailed on a lake, for 4 months a year. The water temperature in this lake stays between 50 and 75 degrees F, making ideal for preserving the hull and the gear.
- BOAT HAS NEVER HIT BOTTOM OR BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. Most boats have stories of hitting a rocky bottom, involved in gale force winds, or even capsizing. Such events on Lake Champlain are very rare, as owners stay clear of well identified danger zones, and winds typically blow under 20 knots during the summer.
- WELL THOUGHT OF RIGGING AND EQUIPMENT. Many owners today have the sailboats rigged with tons of equipment, making them heavy and impossible to navigate in light air. Catch & Release has been equipped with just the right gear needed by couples or families to cruise efficiently for a weekend or during summer vacation. For example, instead of noisy windmills or protruding solar panels, power is delivered by a compact fuel cell, hidden inside the trunk, that delivers reliable 24h clean power.
- 2017. Almost all new boats delivered today come with quirks and glitches. In their first years of production, manufacturers have to make adjustments to improve and fix design flaws. Any expert will tell you it's best to avoid boats in their first production years. Being a 2017 production model, this means this boat was made in it's 5th year of production. This is the reason why Catch and Release has been a very reliable boat since it was first sailed.
The Oceanis 45 is a fantastic cruiser for families and couples. Designed by French naval architects Finot – Conq, it has won many awards for design and performance since it's launch (having snagged the prestigious European Sailboat of the Year award in the family cruiser category for 2012), making it one of the most successful modern sailboats in it's class. The sleek hull with hard chines above the waterline makes it great looking from every angle. All hatches forward of the companionway are flush with the deck, in contemporary style.
The deck and cockpit layout is clean and functional, making it safe to sail even with 6 people relaxing on deck. Cockpit flooring and chairs are in beautiful hardwood teak. All working lines run aft, with the jibsheets coming to self-tailing winches on the cockpit coamings within easy reach of the twin helm stations aft. All other lines, including mainsail controls, come to a pair of winches (1 electric and 1 manual) on the coachroof either side of the companionway.
The cockpit is very wide, with a large fixed table in the center with folding leaves, so crew can easily brace themselves to windward when the boat is heeled. This table has two insulated storage compartments. The Catch has a multi-function 12 inch nav display mounted in a module at its aft end, where it could be easily viewed from either helm station.
Helm ergonomics are good, with clear sightlines forward and a mix of comfortable steering positions. A long bench seat directly abaft the wheels makes it easy for others to come aft and socialize with the helmsperson.
The cockpit’s most impressive feature is the electrically controlled full-width fold-down transom. With just a touch of a button, the entire transom, including that bench seat behind the helms, folds down flat to form an immense teak-covered beach that sits nearly flush with the water. This will make it very easy for infants to crawl on and off the boat from a tender.
The aft staterooms are well conceived, with lots of light and headroom and proper double berths that don’t have bites taken out of them to accommodate the engine space. The forward stateroom, taking up a full third of the boat’s interior, is fabulous, with lots of private storage, a generous island double berth and a private ensuite head and shower. Mattresses are made of good quality foam, and have been fitted with extra slatted bed bases, for extra comfort and staying cool in warm weather.
Catch & Release is equipped with an in-mast furling mainsail and a 104 percent genoa, making the boat safe and easy to set up, even in windy conditions. In 13-17 knots of apparent wind, she makes 7 knots at an apparent wind angle of 35 degrees. Pinching to 30 degrees, she will still manage 6.5 knots, and bearing away to 60 degrees will hit 7.7 knots.
Turning off the wind onto a flat reach, speed ranges from 5.7 to 7 knots in 8-12 knots of true wind. On a broad reach at a 140 degree angle in 8 knots of apparent wind, our speed is typically around 5.3 knots. The fastest speed cruised on the Catch with present owners was 9 knots, on 80 degrees apparent.
Because of it's hull design, the Oceanis 45 reaches optimal performance between 5 to 15 degrees of heel, making it very comfortable to sail close reached.
Owners have also added in 2018 a top of the line NORTH SAILS CODE 0, for optimal sailing in light winds. Properly set up, in 4 knot winds, Catch & Release will sail at 3 knots with the CODE 0.
Helm response was generally precise with good feedback. While sailing close-hauled, the single rudder did lose its grip in one moderate gust, so we balanced the helm by increasing tension on the mainsail halyard. In stronger winds I expect you’ll need to reef early to keep the rudder working properly. This boat has a very wide stern and I suspect it would benefit from having twin rudders, like the boats in the Sense line.
This Oceanis 45 is powered by the optional 57hp Yanmar diesel engine, married with a saildrive leg and a bow thruster, making it possible to drive the boat sideways (or in any other direction) with your fingertips, something you will value when maneuvering the boat in close quarters under power.
